Accident
Something that happens by chance โ until we bring up cause and blame.
How We Say It

Where It Comes From
Latin accidere โ 'to fall upon.' From ad- (toward) + cadere (to fall). The word arrived in English through Old French in the 14th century meaning simply 'an event,' without the modern implication of misfortune.
How It's Been Used
Used neutrally for centuries before acquiring its modern association with misfortune and blame. Insurance law, tort law, and media coverage all shape how 'accident' is deployed โ often to deflect responsibility. A car 'accident' implies no fault; a car 'crash' implies someone caused it.
