Old French covenant โ€” agreement. From Latin convenire โ€” to come together, agree. In English law it referred to a formal sealed agreement. In theology it took on the weight of the biblical relationship between God and Israel.
Carries different weight in different contexts. In Jewish theology, the covenant is the central relationship between God and the Jewish people โ€” binding, mutual, and permanent. In American history, 'covenant' appears in the Mayflower Compact and Puritan political thought. In real estate law, a 'restrictive covenant' was used well into the 20th century to prevent Black families from buying property in white neighborhoods.
