Greek monarkhia β rule by a single person. From monos (alone) + arkhein (to rule). Distinguished by Aristotle from aristocracy and democracy. Constitutional monarchy β sovereign authority limited by law and parliament β developed in English political history from the 17th century.
How It's Been Used
Survives in 43 sovereign states, including 26 with reigning monarchs as heads of state. Roles range from ceremonial (Sweden, Japan) to active governance (Saudi Arabia, Brunei). Constitutional monarchies in Europe maintain royal families as symbolic institutions. Debates about abolition recur β most often in the U.K., the Netherlands, and other Commonwealth nations.
