Natural
From nature, or morally correct. The confusion sells.
How We Say It
nachΒ·ΙrΒ·Ιl
Where It Comes From
Latin naturalis β by birth, according to nature. From natura β nature, character, essence. From nasci β to be born. Natural, nation, and native all share the birth root β what is natural is what was there at birth.
How It's Been Used
'Natural' is among the most powerful rhetorical moves in moral argument β if something is natural, it appears beyond human choice or criticism. 'Unnatural' works the same way in reverse. The fallacy of moving from 'is natural' to 'is good' β the naturalistic fallacy β was identified by philosophers but thrives in everyday argument.
