Police
"Public" safety built from private security. State authority or occupying force. Sometimes all in the same shift.
How We Say It

Where It Comes From
Latin politia β civil administration. From Greek polis β city. The modern professional police force emerged with London's Metropolitan Police in 1829, founded by Sir Robert Peel β hence 'bobbies.' In the American South, early police forces grew partly out of slave patrols.
How It's Been Used
Varies enormously across countries β armed and military-style in the U.S., often unarmed in much of Europe, militarized in conflict zones. The 2020 protests following George Floyd's murder prompted significant reform debates β defunding, abolition, community policing β with limited implementation. The relationship between police and policed communities has been a persistent source of conflict throughout U.S. history.
