Education
Learning, indoctrination, credentials, or liberation โ depends.
How We Say It

Where It Comes From
Latin educatio โ a rearing, training. From educare โ to bring up, rear. Related to educere โ to lead out. The two roots suggest different models: filling (bringing up) versus drawing out what is already there.
How It's Been Used
The tension between those two etymological models โ deposit vs. liberation โ runs through every education debate. Paulo Freire named it explicitly in 1968. Who controls curriculum controls what counts as educated โ this is why education is always a political battleground.
