Latin revolutio β€” a turning around. From revolvere β€” to roll back. Originally an astronomical term β€” the revolution of planets, their return. The political sense β€” a turning over of the existing order β€” borrowed the astronomical metaphor.
Revolutions are named and framed retrospectively by whoever writes the history. The American Revolution is celebrated; other revolutions are called coups or insurrections by those who oppose them. 'Revolutionary' is used to sell both political change and consumer products β€” often simultaneously.
