Civic contribution or government theft. You pay either way. Unless you're very poor or rich enough.
How We Say It

Where It Comes From
Latin taxare โ to touch sharply, to estimate, to assess. From Proto-Indo-European root meaning to touch. Task and tax share an origin โ both involved an assigned obligation, something required of you.
How It's Been Used
The framing war over taxes is one of the oldest in democratic politics. 'Tax relief' (Reagan-era language) frames taxes as a burden to be lifted; 'investment in the commons' frames them as collective contribution. The same transfer carries opposite moral valence depending on the word chosen.
